been dodging around all their love in my mind and hiding in attics, saying everything is fine that everything is perfect, and I don't have a thought to lend and I can't take myself seriously so how could any of them? but I'm turning green with envy and calling it inspiration and so I am going North where the cold will set me free I am going North to see what it's like to be lonely I am going North just to get away from me been playing death scenes in my mind and talking to mirrors, saying everything is fine that I don't have to worry that any of this will end but a look and a touch can make me seventeen again and I'd like to be myself this time, but it's damned easy to pretend and so I am going North where the cold will set me free I am going North to see what it's like to be lonely I am going North just to get away from me and I wish you were here to make my folly clear 'cause I've had enough--yes I've reached the end and I could use the warmth of a friend been picturing Oregon in my head and thinking too much of every single thing you've said like how I seek perfection where there is none to find and my life is torn to pieces, but only in my mind and I'd put it back together if I only had the time and so I am coming home where the cold is in the sea I am coming home where I never have to be lonely I am coming home--I just want to be me

you should do what you want to live like you ought to please take your time now please take your time now just don't keep us waiting this morning I grew I learned something new let me try to remember let me try to remember you said being lonely is different from solitude but I can't tell the difference no I can't tell the difference you should do what you want to live like you ought to please take your time now please take your time now just don't keep us waiting I want to discover something to remember nothing too complex a new way for my heart to beat so I'm coming back now the same way I left you my hands are both open nothing but myself

about

Occam was recorded entirely in Eugene, OR, with the exception of 'Alone' and the instrumental line of 'Solitude,' both of which were recorded at a sled dog kennel in rural Alaska. The lyrics for 'North' (except the last verse) were written in Oregon while looking forward to traveling to Alaska, and the lyrics for 'Solitude' were written in Alaska while pining for home.

'Occupations' is the evolution of one of the very first improvised loops I ever performed, and thus seemed like a logical place to start Occam. 'Amelia' is dedicated to my beautiful bike of the same name.

'No Heart But Soul' and 'Alone' were initially composed as the soundtrack to Timothy Schneider's as yet unmade short film, Left With You. While plucking out the chord progression to 'Alone', I thought it might make a nice, minimal, whispery song a la Iron & Wine or Sufjan Stevens. Lacking their voices, 'Solitude' was as close as I got. The lyrics to that song owe much to the influences of Philip Pullman and Ursula K. LeGuin.
